Butterflies alight May 31 2015
“Happiness is like a butterfly which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you.” (Nathaniel Hawthorne)
Sitting quietly doesn't come naturally to me. I like to make things happen. I need to make things happen.
In recent years I have been trying to be still more often, to seek peace and contentment in that stillness and to live in the moment when possible - my definition of happiness.
"Pursuing" that peace, though, seems to make it elusive. Trying to coerce it into my life keeps it beyond my grasp.
But sometimes, if I am truly able to be still, quiet contentment alights upon me like the delicate touch of a butterfly wing. And for that moment my mind rests and peace comes.
