Underwater waltz December 06 2015 2 Comments

I always loved lying just beneath the surface of the water, listening to the muted sounds of life above filtered through the music of waves dancing around and with me. Peaceful, therapeutic, other-worldly.

My “Underwater waltz” plate surprised me when it emerged from the kiln.

The leaves were created using copper foil and turned out as I had hoped. Copper foil turns a rich red when fired, and encourages a sprinkling of small bubbles trapped in the glass.

The surprise was the large bubbles that formed around the design. I see leaves floating just beneath the surface of the water. Perfectly preserved, slowly swaying and dancing as the waves roll around them.

An underwater waltz inviting us all to dance.
