Portfolio bowl abstract - Poppy field

$0.00

A large and stunning poppy field bowl with rich green hills and blue sky, impressionistic in its colour and shape. Glimpses of clear glass peek through strong opaque colours. A burst of pleasure for the senses.

This piece was featured in my blog here.

I suggest that you wash all Glass by Charis by hand. It is food safe.

Putting this piece in the microwave is not recommended.

Size: 12.875" (2.375" deep)

How it was created: The "Poppy field bowl" was originally fired with clear glass for the base topped with hand-crushed opaque glass (frit). That bowl cracked during slumping. I broke it into several pieces and fired it again. For the second time it cracked during slumping. Next I laid a circle of clear glass on the kiln shelf and placed the cracked bowl on top. Ten hours of firing gave the bowl time to melt into the clear glass below. Still it cracked a third time while slumping. Again I placed a 14" circle of clear glass on the kiln shelf and put the cracked bowl on top. However this time I incorporated a much longer time for annealing in the firing schedule. The next morning I opened the kiln and found a stunning abstract of a poppy field. This bowl was in the kiln for eight days in all. And it was worth it.

My process often adds bubbles in the glass and no piece is perfectly round or square, adding to its appeal.

Fusing glass, often in several layers, results in items that may seem surprisingly heavy when first unpacked.
